Breast lift (mastopexy)

Pregnancy, with or without nursing, can cause breasts to lose their shape and to sag. While sometimes breasts enlarge after pregnancy, it is much more common for the breasts to lose volume as well as skin tone. When the volume reduction and sagging is of minimal degree, breast augmentation with implants will suffice to return the breasts to a pleasing shape and size. However, implants can only lift so much, and often a surgical breast lift (mastopexy) is what is needed. If there is sufficient breast tissue, then the lift is all that is required. In some circumstances, it is best to perform the lift and also augment the breasts to add volume using implants.

There are several different ways to do a breast lift. Which is best for you depends on your anatomy and your goals. That is why a consultation is essential in making a plan customized to you. During the consultation, I want to know what your original cup size was, what cup size you would like to be, and then measure you so as to determine how much lift is needed. Depending on the amount of lift required, we can choose from the various techniques the one that will best to achieve your goals. Sometimes all that is needed is to remove some skin from above the nipple-areola to reposition it a little bit. More often, some additional skin needs to be removed and breast tissues tightened for a better shape and scar quality. In all cases, the incisions and resulting scars will be covered by typical clothing including most swim suits. As in many plastic surgery procedures, the trade off is the overall result for the scars. Since the scars are generally inconspicuous, most women consider the trade off well worth it.
